Guide to Preparing for Your Newborn Photoshoot

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy! A newborn photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture those precious early moments with your baby. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, here’s a guide to help you prepare yourself and your baby for the session.

1. Schedule the Photoshoot at the Right Time

  • Ideal Age: Newborn photoshoots are best done within the first 5–14 days of life. During this time, babies are sleepier and more flexible, making it easier to pose them.

  • Book Early: Reach out to your photographer during your pregnancy to secure a spot. Once your baby arrives, confirm the exact date and time.

2. Choose the Right Location

  • In-Studio: My studio space is set up to be a white space which has plenty of natural light with studio lights and a beanbag prop for the wrapped up newborn shots. These images are timeless and natural throughout, focusing completely on the beautiful features of your newborn baby.

  • At Home: If you prefer a lifestyle photoshoot in your own space, ensure the room is clean, clutter-free, and has plenty of natural light. This type of photoshoot is without studio lighting or props. It's a representation of your life in your home with your little family.

3. Prepare Your Baby

  • Keep Baby Awake Before the Session: Try to keep your baby awake for 1–2 hours before the photoshoot. This helps them sleep more soundly during the session.

  • Feed Baby Right Before: A full baby is a happy baby! Feed your little one just before the session to ensure they’re content and sleepy.

  • Dress Baby Simply: Dress your baby in loose, comfortable clothing (like a onesie) to avoid marks on their skin. Neutral tones are best. I will also use wraps or blankets for the photos.

  • Pack a Nappies Bag: Bring extra nappies, wipes, a dummy (if you use one), and a change of clothes for your baby.

4. Dress for Success (Parents and Siblings)

  • Keep It Simple: Wear neutral, solid colours or soft pastels. Avoid busy patterns or logos that can distract from the focus—your baby.

  • Coordinate Outfits: If family photos are included, coordinate outfits with your partner and other children for a cohesive look.

  • Comfort First: Choose clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

5. Prepare the Space (For At-Home Sessions)

  • Clear the Area: Declutter the room where the photoshoot will take place. Focus on spaces with good natural light, like the nursery or living room.

  • Warm It Up: Newborns are used to being warm and cozy. Turn up the heat slightly to keep your baby comfortable, especially if they’ll be undressed for photos.

6. Relax and Go with the Flow

  • Expect Breaks: Newborns need to eat, be changed, or simply cuddle during the session. This is expected and the time allowed accommodates this.

  • Be Patient: Posing and capturing the perfect shot can take time.

  • Stay Calm: Babies can sense stress, so try to stay relaxed. If your baby gets fussy, don’t worry—we will take our time to get the shot.

7. Bring Personal Touches

  • Props and Sentimental Items: If you have special blankets, hats, or toys you’d like included in the photos, let your photographer know in advance.

  • Sibling and Family Shots: If you want photos with siblings or the whole family, discuss this with your photographer beforehand so they can plan accordingly.

8. After the Session

  • Rest and Recover: Newborn photoshoots can be tiring for both you and your baby. Plan for a relaxing day afterward.

  • Review and Select Photos: I will provide a gallery of images for you to choose from. Take your time to pick your favourites.

Final Tips

  • Please let me know about any specific poses, themes, or ideas you have in mind.

  • I prefer to keep the newborn poses natural and I don't force the baby into any positions that they're not moving into.

  • Most importantly, enjoy the experience! These photos will be cherished memories for years to come.

By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for a successful and stress-free newborn photoshoot. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out— I'm here to help!

Wishing you a wonderful session and a lifetime of beautiful memories with your little one! 💕
